Long-form histories of Linux distributions — how they started, how they ended, and what still runs. Written from release notes, mailing lists and archives, not from memory.

Privacy

This site sets no cookies, runs no JavaScript, loads nothing from a third party, and has no analytics product attached to it. The short version of this page is: nothing about you is collected here beyond the request your browser had to make in order to read the page, and any email you choose to send.

What the site does not do

What is unavoidably recorded

The site is served as static files through a hosting and CDN provider (Cloudflare). To deliver a page at all, that provider processes the ordinary information every web request carries: your IP address, the time, the path you asked for, the HTTP status returned, your user-agent string, and the referring page if your browser sent one. It is processed on our behalf, for two purposes only:

I do not build visitor profiles, do not attempt to identify individual readers, do not join this data to anything else, and do not export it. The lawful basis, for readers in jurisdictions that ask for one, is legitimate interest in operating and defending a website. Log data is retained for a limited period by the provider under its own policy and is not archived by me.

Cloudflare publishes its own privacy documentation at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy. Reading it is worthwhile: what a CDN sees is the honest limit of any “we collect nothing” claim, including this one.

Email

If you write to editor@lxnaydesign.net, I hold your message and address for as long as the correspondence is useful — for a correction, that can mean keeping it indefinitely, because the record of why a page changed matters. Your address is never added to a list, sold, shared, published or used to contact you about anything other than your own message. There is no mailing list to be added to.

If a correction of yours changes a page, you are credited by name on Corrections unless you ask not to be. Ask, and you are not, no reason needed.

Links off this site

Articles link to primary sources: project documentation, release notes, repositories, mirrors, the Internet Archive. Those are other people’s sites with other people’s privacy practices, and this policy stops at the click. Nothing here is a tracking redirect — an outbound link goes straight to the destination shown.

Your rights

You can ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by writing to editor@lxnaydesign.net. In practice the answer is usually “an email thread and nothing else”, and deleting it takes about a minute. Requests are answered within 30 days.

Children

This site is not directed at children, collects nothing knowingly from anyone, and has no mechanism by which a child could submit information other than sending an email.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it, and any change that affects what is collected is logged on Corrections like any other material change to the site. There is no version of this site’s future in which it quietly acquires an analytics script.
